Bulbul wants to remain BCB president if the government wants

The National Sports Council (NSC) recently replaced Faruk Ahmed with former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam Bulbul as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following this development, Bulbul — now serving as BCB President — expressed his willingness to continue in the role if the NSC decides to retain him. However, he made it clear that he will not contest in the upcoming BCB elections.

After the fall of the Awami League government, Faruk Ahmed was appointed as a BCB director under the NSC quota. Subsequently, in a board election, he was chosen as BCB President, replacing Nazmul Hassan Papon. But just nine months later, the NSC removed Faruk Ahmed and appointed Bulbul as a director, who later took over as the board’s president.

Upon becoming president, Aminul Islam Bulbul remarked that due to the short tenure, he would serve like a “T20 innings” at the BCB. Yet, with the BCB election approaching, he has now expressed his desire to continue as president if given the opportunity.

Speaking on Sunday (24 August) at a “Cricket Development & Idea” program in Narayanganj, Bulbul told reporters that he would not contest the polls but would continue if entrusted again by the NSC.

“I have already said, I will never take part in the election (for BCB). How can I? I don’t have the resources that are needed to run an election campaign. I came freely through the National Sports Council. If they want me to continue, I will stay and try my best,” Bulbul explained.

Reflecting on his tenure, he compared his role to a T20 game: “There are many confusions. In T20 cricket, you have 120 balls to play, not just two overs. Everything will depend on the situation.”

According to the BCB constitution, the current committee’s tenure ends this October, after which elections must be held. Rumors suggest an ad-hoc committee may be formed instead, but Bulbul insisted the elections will take place on time.

“The priority of the cricket board is to run cricket. Elections are held every four years. Since the time has come, it will be held on schedule,” Bulbul assured.

He further added, “Our focus as the current BCB board is on cricket. Surely, elections will take place on time. For that, you will soon learn about the election commission and the related processes.”
