Bangladesh scripted a new chapter in their cricket history by defeating Australia by 86 runs (DLS method) in the first ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. A brilliant all-round performance from Mosaddek Hossain and a devastating spell from pacer Nahid Rana helped the Tigers secure only their second-ever ODI victory against the Australians.
It was Bangladesh’s first ODI win over Australia since June 18, 2005, when Mohammad Ashraful’s maiden ODI century inspired a five-wicket victory in Cardiff. The latest triumph ended a wait of 21 years and 15 matches (with one match abandoned) against the five-time world champions.
After being sent in to bat, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 284 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored 57, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 runs.
The highlight of the innings came from Mosaddek Hossain, who made a remarkable return to international cricket after four years. Batting at number six, he smashed an unbeaten 86 off 70 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes to propel Bangladesh to a challenging total.
Mosaddek later made an impact with the ball as well, claiming two wickets for 37 runs from his 10 overs. However, the chief destroyer was pace sensation Nahid Rana, who tore through the Australian batting line-up with figures of 4 for 41 from his 10-over spell.
Australia were struggling at 191 for 9 in 42.2 overs when play was halted due to lightning and adverse weather conditions. Although Bangladesh were just one wicket away from sealing victory outright, players and spectators had to wait nearly an hour for an official decision.
At 8:00 PM local time, match officials confirmed Bangladesh as winners by 86 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, sparking celebrations in Mirpur.
Before this match, Bangladesh had managed just one victory in 20 ODIs against Australia. The memorable triumph in Mirpur now stands as one of the Tigers’ most significant wins in ODI cricket.
