The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed deep concern over allegations that Bangladesh national team cricketer Naim Hasan was harassed, verbally abused, and subjected to an attempted abduction by police personnel. The board has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident and urged authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday (June 13), the BCB strongly condemned the alleged behavior towards the cricketer, describing it as unacceptable and inappropriate.
“The BCB unequivocally condemns such unacceptable and inappropriate conduct towards a player and views the matter with the utmost seriousness. It is deeply regrettable that a national athlete had to face such treatment from members of a law enforcement agency. The issue requires immediate attention,” the board said.
The board also stated that it has been in close contact with Naim Hasan and his family since becoming aware of the incident. Additionally, the BCB is actively working with the relevant authorities and administration in Chattogram to help ensure a proper resolution of the matter.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity, and rights of all players, the BCB said it would continue to closely monitor the situation.
According to reports, the incident took place on Friday night (June 12) after Naim arrived in Chattogram from Dhaka. While traveling home by auto-rickshaw from Shah Amanat International Airport, he was stopped by police in the Lalkhan Bazar area.
Despite identifying himself as a national team cricketer, Naim allegedly came under physical assault by Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam of Khulshi Police Station, who reportedly struck him with a baton. He was later taken to the police station.
The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of BCB President Tamim Iqbal, following which action was taken. Authorities have already withdrawn SI Shafiqul Islam, Constable Russell, and another constable involved in the operation.
Meanwhile, on Saturday morning, Naim’s brother Sabbir Alam filed a case accusing the officers of assault and attempted abduction. The case names SI Shafiqul Islam, Constable Russell, and police informant Sohel as accused.
