Bangladesh Women suffered a four-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in their second match of the Women's Asia Cup, despite starting the tournament with a dominant win. The defeat extended Sri Lanka's winning streak against Bangladesh to seven matches.
Batting first after losing the toss on Sunday night, Bangladesh made a promising start through openers Juwairiya Ferdous Joyita and Dilara Akter Dola. However, Joyita was dismissed for 14 off 10 balls, while Dilara scored 26 off 26.
Captain Nigar Sultana Joty failed to make an impact, scoring just four runs from nine balls. Sobhana Mostary and Shorna Akter then added 41 runs for the fourth wicket, with Sobhana making 34 off 41 balls.
Fahima Khatun's late boundaries helped Bangladesh post a modest total of 114. For Sri Lanka, Chamudi Praboda claimed three wickets for 21 runs, while Sugandika Kumari took two for 22.
Sri Lanka got off to a shaky start in the chase, losing five wickets for 44 runs. Bangladesh's Marufa Akter was particularly impressive, dismissing Chamari Athapaththu and Imesha Dulani early and later finishing with three wickets for 21 runs.
However, Harshitha Samarawickrama turned the match around with a crucial 38-run partnership with Nilakshi de Silva. After Nilakshi was dismissed for 18 by Marufa, Harshitha took control of the chase, hitting boundaries in the 18th over and a six in the 19th.
Harshitha remained unbeaten on 48 off 37 balls, including four fours and two sixes, to guide Sri Lanka to victory with six wickets down.
Despite the defeat, Bangladesh still have a chance to reach the semi-finals. They will face the United Arab Emirates in their final group-stage match on Tuesday, with a win enough to secure a place in the last four.
Bangladesh had opened their campaign with a 71-run victory over Indonesia.
