India did not accept the Women Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi

India once again refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi after winning the women’s title, repeating the controversy seen during the men’s tournament.

India defeated Sri Lanka to win the Women’s Asia Cup for a record eighth time, but the Indian women’s team did not collect the trophy from Naqvi during the post-match presentation ceremony at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

The presentation ceremony began nearly an hour after the match. Naqvi, who attended as the chief guest, presented the runners-up prize money to Sri Lanka. However, the ceremony ended before the trophy could be handed to the champions.

According to reports, the usual arrangement was for the ACC president to present the trophy to the winning team after the final. However, India were reportedly unwilling to receive it from Naqvi and instead proposed collecting the trophy from ACC vice-president Khalid Al Zarouni. Naqvi, however, remained firm on the arrangement.

Naqvi was joined on the presentation stage by Al Zarouni, Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee chairman Irfan Wickramaratne, the Emirates Cricket Board secretary-general and a female representative of the tournament’s title sponsor. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajiv Shukla were not present on the stage.

A similar incident occurred during the men’s Asia Cup final in Dubai on September 28, 2025, when India won the title. Naqvi was also present then as the ACC chief, but the Indian players did not go on stage to collect the trophy. They later celebrated with an imaginary trophy instead.
