Joty Wants to Step Down as T20 Captain, BCB Yet to Decide

Bangladesh women’s T20I captain Nigar Sultana Joty has decided to step down from the captaincy after the Asian Games, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yet to make a decision on her request.

BCB Women’s Wing chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu confirmed that Joty has informed the board president and him in writing about her decision. However, she will continue to lead the Bangladesh women’s team in the ODI format.

“Joty has written to the BCB president and me, informing us that she wants to step down as captain of the T20 team after the Asian Games. We have not made any decision on this yet. She wants to take this decision to focus more on her batting. However, she will continue as the ODI captain. After the Asian Games, we will sit together and decide what to do next,” Babu told the media.

Joty was appointed Bangladesh’s captain across all formats in 2021 and has led the team to several memorable victories. However, the team’s recent poor performances, including their elimination from the semi-finals of the recently concluded Women’s Asia Cup, have increased the pressure on the captain.

Babu, however, believes this is not the right time to focus on the team’s recent results, with a major tournament coming up.

“There is a big tournament ahead. So, I don’t think this is the right time to discuss the team’s performance. Whatever happened in the past, we know Joty is the country’s best batter. I want the players to stay mentally strong and give their best performance at the Asian Games,” he said.

Bangladesh are set to compete in the Asian Games, where the team will look to put their recent struggles behind them and make a strong impression.
