Bangladesh did not travel to India to participate in the T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka in February-March this year based on the decision of a single individual, according to an investigation report.
Bangladesh had been unwilling to travel to India for the tournament and had requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to change its matches to Sri Lanka instead. The ICC, however, rejected the request and allowed Scotland to participate in the World Cup in Bangladesh’s place.
After the elected government took office, an investigation committee was formed to look into the circumstances surrounding Bangladesh’s absence from the World Cup. The committee was formed by then Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Haque.
The report stated that the decision not to send the Bangladesh cricket team to India was made by “one individual.” Although the report itself did not name the person, journalists at a press conference were told in response to a question that the individual was then Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul.
This means, according to the report’s findings, that Bangladesh’s decision not to travel to India for the T20 World Cup was taken solely by Asif Nazrul.
However, the investigation committee said it could not speak to former adviser Asif Nazrul, former Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam or the ICC during its investigation.
The committee’s report was presented at the National Sports Council by its chairman, Dr A.K.M. Wali Ullah, additional secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The other two members of the committee were former Bangladesh captain and current BCB chief selector Habibul Bashar and Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dostagir.
