Bangladesh Women have advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games cricket tournament without playing their quarter-final match after their game against China was abandoned due to a waterlogged outfield.
The rain-affected match could not even get underway, as the wet outfield was deemed unfit for play. The toss also could not take place despite the rain stopping and players taking part in a warm-up session.
Match officials eventually decided that the conditions were not suitable for cricket and called off the game, with Bangladesh progressing to the semi-finals by virtue of their higher T20I ranking.
Bangladesh are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, while China are ranked 36th. Bangladesh will face the winner of the second quarter-final between Japan and India in the semi-final on September 20.
For China, the match against Bangladesh was set to be one of the biggest games in their international cricket journey, but they were denied the opportunity to take the field.
Bangladesh have previously faced China in the Asian Games semi-finals in 2010, winning by nine wickets. China were bowled out for just 34 runs before Bangladesh chased down the target in only seven overs.
Bangladesh Women have won three medals in previous editions of the Asian Games—two silver medals and one bronze. Batter Sobhana Mostary is hoping the team can add another medal to that collection in Japan.
Ahead of the abandoned match against China, Mostary said in a video message, “We have won medals in the Asian Games before. Hopefully, we can return home with a medal this time as well.”
Bangladesh will now await the result of Japan and India’s quarter-final to learn their semi-final opponents.
