Bangladesh Women will face India once again in the semi-final of the Asian Games, just two weeks after suffering a 40-run defeat to their neighbours in the semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup.
India secured their place in the Asian Games semi-final with a comfortable win over hosts Japan in the fourth quarter-final.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, advanced to the last four without playing their quarter-final after their match against China was abandoned due to rain. Bangladesh progressed on the basis of their higher T20I ranking.
Bangladesh and India will meet in the Asian Games semi-final on September 20. The other semi-final will see Pakistan take on Sri Lanka on the same day.
In the fourth quarter-final, India won the toss and elected to bowl first against Japan. Their bowlers dominated the hosts, who were restricted to 57 runs in 19.5 overs.
India then chased down the target with eight wickets in hand, reaching the total with 90 balls to spare.
India are a familiar opponent for Bangladesh, but their recent meetings have not gone in Bangladesh’s favour. In the first semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai on September 10, India defeated Bangladesh by 40 runs.
Batting first after winning the toss, India posted 149-6 in 20 overs. Bangladesh could manage only 109-7 from their 20 overs, with Sorna Akter top-scoring for the side with an unbeaten 22.
The Asian Games semi-final will also come amid a change in Bangladesh’s T20 leadership. Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty has emailed the BCB expressing her desire to step down as T20 captain, with her resignation requested to take effect after the ongoing Asian Games.
The BCB has yet to make a final decision on Joty’s request.
