The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed South African coach Malibongwe Maketa as the assistant coach of the Bangladesh national men’s cricket team.
Maketa has been appointed for a term from October 2026 to November 2028. The 46-year-old coach will join Bangladesh’s coaching setup in the United Arab Emirates during the team’s upcoming series against Afghanistan.
Maketa brings more than two decades of coaching experience across domestic, international and high-performance cricket in South Africa. He is also a Cricket South Africa (CSA) Level 4-qualified coach.
He has previously served as assistant coach of the South Africa national team, head coach of South Africa A, head coach of the South Africa Under-19 team, head coach of the National Academy and head coach of the Warriors franchise.
Maketa worked as an assistant coach with the South African national team from 2017 to 2019. During that period, he played an important role in preparing the Proteas for international cricket and was also part of the coaching staff at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England.
Reacting to his appointment, Maketa said he was delighted to join the Bangladesh national team and thanked the BCB for its trust.
“I am delighted to take on the role of assistant coach of the Bangladesh national team. I am sincerely grateful to the Bangladesh Cricket Board for the trust and confidence they have placed in me. I look forward to making a positive contribution to the team’s success,” Maketa said.
He added: “We have a young and promising team. I am excited to work with Phil (Phil Simmons) and the rest of the coaching staff to help bring out the best in the players and support their continued development. Thank you once again for this opportunity. I am excited to begin this new journey and contribute to the Bangladesh national team.”
