Hasan Mahmud Makes History as Bangladesh’s First Fast Bowler to Take a Test Hat-Trick

Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud made history against Afghanistan on Sunday, becoming the first fast bowler from Bangladesh to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. He is also only the third Bangladeshi bowler to achieve the feat in the longest format.

The milestone came on the third day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan on October 11, when Hasan dismissed three batters in consecutive deliveries during the 83rd over of Afghanistan’s innings.

Hasan began his hat-trick with the dismissal of Ismat Alam on the third ball of the over (82.3). A back-of-a-length delivery kept low and moved into the batter, beating his bat and crashing into the stumps.

On the very next delivery (82.4), Qais Ahmad edged the ball towards the slips. Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Kumar Das dived to his right to complete an excellent catch and give Hasan his second wicket in successive balls.

The historic moment arrived on the fifth delivery (82.5), when Hasan trapped Zia-ur-Rehman lbw. The on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, but Bangladesh successfully reviewed the decision, confirming the dismissal and completing Hasan’s hat-trick.

Before Hasan, Alok Kapali became the first Bangladeshi to take a Test hat-trick against Pakistan in 2003. Sohag Gazi followed in 2013, claiming a hat-trick against New Zealand.

Hasan’s achievement adds another landmark to Bangladesh’s Test cricket history and makes him the country’s first pace bowler to take three wickets in three consecutive deliveries in the format.
