Bangladesh Women’s football team suffered a heavy 10-0 defeat to North Korea in their opening match of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Monday.
The result marked the biggest defeat in the history of Bangladesh women’s football. Peter Butler’s side endured a difficult outing at Nagai Stadium in Osaka, conceding seven goals before half-time.
North Korea, one of the favourites for the gold medal in Japan, dominated from the outset. Their recent success in international age-group football was reflected in a commanding performance against Bangladesh.
Ryon Jong scored twice in the 10th minute to put North Korea 2-0 ahead, before Hwang Yu-yong added another two minutes later.
Chae An-yong then scored twice in the 18th and 35th minutes, while Kim Kyong-yong added two more goals in the 40th and 43rd minutes to give North Korea a 7-0 lead at the break.
Bangladesh conceded three more goals in the second half, with Ring Song, Jong Kum and Han Jin-hong finding the net.
Despite conceding 10 goals, Bangladesh could not score even once against the North Korean defence.
Bangladesh will now look to bounce back when they face another strong opponent, South Korea, at the same venue on Thursday.
