Bangladesh ended their FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with a heavy 9-2 defeat to hosts Indonesia in their final Group A match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday (October 1).
Bangladesh had already lost their opening two matches, going down 3-0 to Malaysia and 1-0 to Singapore. They suffered another defeat against Indonesia to finish their campaign without a point.
Indonesia took the lead in the 11th minute when Mitchell Le Baker finished from Ole Romeny’s pass. Baker doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 20th minute, scoring his second goal from a scramble inside the Bangladesh penalty area.
Rizky Ridho made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, but Bangladesh pulled one back four minutes later. Shahriar Emon headed home from Shukir’s cross to reduce the deficit.
Indonesia restored their three-goal advantage almost immediately, with Baker completing his hat-trick in the 37th minute after receiving a cutback from Romeny.
The hosts added two more goals before half-time. Baker completed his four-goal first half in the 42nd minute before Justin Hubner scored in stoppage time to give Indonesia a 6-1 lead at the break.
Indonesia continued to dominate after the restart, but Bangladesh goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon made several important saves to keep the scoreline unchanged for much of the second half.
The final eight minutes, however, produced four more goals. Luke Vikari scored Indonesia’s seventh in the 90th minute before Farhan Ali Wasihed pulled one back for Bangladesh in the first minute of stoppage time.
Indonesia then added two more goals through Kevin Diks in the sixth minute of stoppage time and Baker in the seventh to complete a 9-2 victory.
With seven points from three matches, Indonesia finished top of Group A on goal difference and advanced to the final. Bangladesh, meanwhile, ended their FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with three defeats.
