Shanto unfazed by New Zealand challenge

With Bangladesh at the knife-edge of an ODI series defeat to New Zealand at home den for the first time after 2008, Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was appointed as the captain in the crucial third and final game, was unfazed by the challenge ahead.

He rather stressed upon the requirements of enjoying the game and ending the series on a good note for a World Cup boost.

"We cannot think what happened in 2008 (their last ODI series loss to New Zealand at home) and it is important to end the game on a good note tomorrow," Shanto said.

The New Zealand leads the series 1-0 following their 86-run victory in the second game. The first match was washed out due to heavy rain. The latest victory was the first in this country in an ODI since 2008.

To avoid a series defeat, Bangladesh would take on New Zealand in the third and final match tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

"To be honest if we can end the game on a good note our team will be in a good shape and if I can end the game on a good note it will be helpful for me as well," Shanto added.

Regular captain Shakib Al Hasan was rested for the whole series while Liton Das who was the captain in the first two matches was also given a break.

Shanto who was appointed as the 16th captain is seen as a future leader of Bangladesh and his first assignment is a tricky one. He said he would savour the role.

"It is not a challenge but a matter to enjoy. I am really feeling good for the opportunity and now the way our team is at the moment with the World Cup ahead," Shanto said.

"I think as a player this is a proud moment for me and for my family members. The board gave this opportunity and I am very excited about it. Hopefully I will enjoy it tomorrow," he added.

Although Shanto believes that the victory in tomorrow's match will be a boost for World Cup but a defeat won't have any impact as far as their preparation is concerned.

"Winning any game is important and if we can win tomorrow, there will be a good feeling around but if we lose I don't think it will have a huge impact on us in the World Cup," he opined.
