Bangladesh fined by ICC for slow over-rate in second ODI against NZ

Bangladesh have been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second ODI against New Zealand national cricket team.

In a statement released on Wednesday (April 22), the ICC confirmed that the Bangladesh national cricket team were fined 10 percent of their match fee. The sanction was imposed after the hosts fell short of the required over-rate at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh were found to be two overs short of the target within the allotted time.

Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Mehidy pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul leveled the charge.

Despite the penalty, Bangladesh bounced back strongly in the series. After losing the first ODI, they leveled the series 1-1 with a convincing six-wicket win in the second match.

Opting to field first, Bangladesh bowled out New Zealand for 198 in 48.2 overs. Chasing the target, the hosts comfortably reached 199/4 in 35.5 overs to seal the victory.
